우리가 고깃국에 밥을 만다면 이 샌드위치는 고기 육수에 담갔다 빼 만들어진다. 이탈리안 비프라는 시카고의 명물 음식 중 하나이며 이탈리아 이민자들 손에서 탄생했다.

무슨 음식이든 그 원조를 먹어봐야 진가를 알 수 있기에 이탈리안 비프의 원조집으로 알려진 곳을 방문했다. 1938년에 개업했고 본점은 리틀 이태리에 위치하고 있다.

리틀 이태리는 완전 다운타운은 아닌데 대륙 횡단 기차를 타기 전 시간이 남아 일부러 본점으로 갔다. 한적한 동네였고 길 건너편에는 경쟁이 되는지 서브웨이가 있었다.

메뉴는 자세히 살펴보진 않았으나 이탈리안 비프 말고 다른 샌드위치와 핫도그도 판다. 감자튀김 같은 사이드도 보였는데 어쨌든 이탈리안 비프만 딱 기억하고 가면 된다.

이탈리안 비프 주문 시 골라야 할 옵션으론 첫째는 사이즈, 둘째는 고기 육수에 담글지 말지, 셋째는 토핑 추가다. 빅 사이즈 DIPPED로 매운 고추를 추가해 주문했다.

앉아서 먹고 갈 자리는 따로 없어 간이 테이블에 서서 먹어야 하고 전반적으로 쾌적하진 않다. 대신 벽면 곳곳에 업력을 드러내는 기사나 사진이 붙어있어 운치는 좋다.

이탈리안 비프를 받아 포장을 까보니 종이와 랩으로 총 네 겹 포장됐었다. 고기 육수에 푹 젖어있었는데 종이로 잘 말아 들었음에도 고깃기름이 멈출 줄 모르고 흘렀다.

조심스럽게 한입 했고 매운 고추의 알싸함이 탁 다가오더니 이어서 고기 육즙을 뿜으며 빵과 함께 한 번에 녹아내렸다. 고기와 빵이 한 몸처럼 느껴질 만큼 부드러웠다.

매운 고추 맛은 오이지와 판박이였는데 그 덕분에 아낌없는 고기 양이 하나도 부담스럽지가 않았다. 깊은 풍미에 침샘을 자극하고 먹을수록 희열이 있었던 경험이었다.

PS. 손이 더러워지는 건 감안해야 함

Ordered an Italian beef and some Chicago dogs. Loved it all and will be back.
Fries are not my personal favourite when bringing home, but are the type you would want to eat hot and ready

In-N-Out or just sit outside enjoying your food with friends and families a place you want to go is AL'S #1 Italian Beef!!!! My family has been talking me there since I was little we would just drive up here in one day just to have AL'S #1 Reef the owner talked to us made sure we had everything and we sit on the guard rails back then ate our food. Now that I live here I went to AL'S #1 Reef because I've been craving for there food. Let me say Never a disappointment People there are so Friendly and so Fast and their Food there is Fantastic!! So I tell people if you ever go to Chicago and you want Great Food and Good Service Go To AL'S #1 Beff !!!

It’s a Chicago thing and I’m glad my buddies took me there to experience a taste of Chicago. The meat is seasoned well and the bread is slightly soggy from the juices. The combo makes for a delicious delicacy

Fire. About $22 for a beef and sausage combo with hot/sweet peppers. Comes with fries and drink. Best beef I've ever had in Chicago and I've had a ton.
